So on Friday, god sent us the bible from heaven.

Not really, only Steve motherfucking lacy dropped his fourth album!!! I have personally been a fan of Steve Lacy’s work since he released Apollo XXI back in 2019, and have been keen on his work ever since. Honestly my favourites from him have gotta be;

  • Hate CD
  • Love 2 Fast
  • Only if
  • Helmet
  • Mercury
  • the feeling
  • Dark Red

See, Steve has many a great song and I can’t say all of them are because pretty much all of his music is written and composed with so much care and attention to detail.

To me, oh yeah? feels like Steve has been doing a lot of yearning in comparison to his last album. In lines like “ The heart takes what it wants, Im not scared to bleed. You know our history” (the feeling). Where the song conveys a wanting, needing and yearning for an ex fling to come back after being alone for so long, with a classic Steve lacy take.

Personally I did really enjoy this one upon release, I first listened to it on my way home from work of an afternoon, having gotten not a lot of sleep the night before, and I was tearing up 4 lines in I shit you not. I’m also 90% sure it was my top song that week.

However, it flips in “pure colour” & “You’re the reflection in my mirror, Can’t let you go, take control of me”. To a more melancholy and depressed tone, almost giving a similar heavy beat to Lana Del Rey’s song “Dealer”, with solemn and desperate lyrics in an attempt rekindle what they had in hopes to fix his loss of control. This one I didn’t align with too much on an emotions level, However, if this song came out during the Gemini Rights era, it would be a way different story. It is still a great song with great production.

We move into “show you me” with a sillier take on a love song, with lyrics like “As of late, I guess I’ve been leaning closer to D” …. Get it. I think we’re getting to see more of the real Steve with this song.

“doom” is literally just an ode to modern dating. Every line in that song is not only true, but it’s REAL. NO ONE communicates how they feel anymore and it’s all just fucking and all no feelings and communication. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in weird situations with people because no one can tell anyone else how they feel. — look. I do the same thing I don’t talk about my feelings either BUT, I do have a lot of feelings. and I yearn because I feel too hard and whatever.

“nothing” is probably the realest song on the album bc I be doing all the same shit he be talking abt in the song, one sidedness, can’t being able to keep someone off your mind, not speaking for a while making you go feral, and being delusional. Steve u are just like me fr or am I just like Steve?

“lovesexdrugbomb” may be my only skip on the album tho. Just putting that one out there, I just don’t love the production and it’s not something I’ll listen to out of choice if that makes sense. Still all love.

“nice shoes/in your world” THIS. we previously got to hear nice shoes way back in august 2025, personally back then I wasn’t a big fan, BUT it did grow on me. Especially that transition into “in your world” meshes PERFECTLY. I did have a little “oh my god what the fuck.?!?!??!” moment on the first listen. personally I do think this song would have been a better album closer over “bebe”, the mellowness of in your world would have made the better finish for me.

And last but not least, “bebe” explores the feeling of meeting someone and immediately falling under their spell or “hex” after not being in love or in a relationship with anyone after a long while. Because honestly real. I’ve been there. You get to that point where you just fall in a false belief of being in “love” while not really knowing too much about them as a person.

Overall, I really enjoyed this album, do I think it will grow more on me? Yes. Gemini Rights had that same effect on me and it’s now one of my favourite albums.

I would definitely recommend this one to others, but maybe not if they were an avid Steve lacy fan, but I definitely would recommend songs like “the feeling” or “nice shoes/in your world”

Is it worth the listen?

If you’re a big fan of yearning, YES!!!!
